San Mateo Village

San Mateo Village

This area is just south of Hillsdale Blvd. between I-101 and Pacific Blvd. Bordered by Hillsdale Avenue on the north, where you can find yummy hummus and gyros at the local Aladdin's deli and market, gasoline at the local Chevron, and wine and spirits at BevMo.  Laurel Creek meanders through the neighborhood and is the southern border. These homes were all built in the 1950s. Some are on slab foundations and others have raised foundations. Most only have one car garages. Many still have the original hardwood floors and vintage details. Think Beaver Cleaver's home. This is a friendly little community with flat lots, fenced yards, lots of fruit trees, sidewalks and did I say friendly? Oh yes. Homes have front porches and neighbors use them. Watch out for kids playing in the street in the cul-de-sacs.

It is a great place to raise a family with George Hall Elementary School in the heart of the community. There is pride of ownership and not too many animals to chew up the landscaping so you see lovely roses and other beautiful plants in well thought out landscaping as you stroll down the sidewalk. There are also competitions on who has the wildest holiday decorations. It's not all hearts and roses, however. There are raccoons who have been known to roll up lawns overnight looking for juicy worms, so if you are thinking of putting in a new lawn, better ask the neighbors what deterrents have worked for them.

It is pretty much all single family homes except on 39th and 40th where you will find apartment buildings and 4-plexes.
